Environmental Policy
The Environmental Policy provides a common vision
for managing PW environmental activities.
The Garrison Commander has defined and documented
the Garrison Policy as stated below. The Director of PW endorses the
Garrison Policy as the PW Environmental Policy:
Fort Lewis Garrison Environmental Policy
Signed by the Fort Lewis Garrison Commander:
21 July 1999
1. The mission of the United States Army Garrison,
I Corps and Fort Lewis, is to support troop unit readiness. The Garrison
will perform this mission in concert with our stewardship responsibility
to protect and conserve the environment. We commit to:
a. Comply with all applicable environmental
policy, laws and regulations.
b. Identify potential sources of pollution and meet or exceed Army goals
for prevention of pollution.
c. Assess the effect on the environment of activities, products, and
services throughout their life cycles. Set objectives and targets to
minimize adverse environmental impacts. Implement and monitor programs
to achieve objectives and targets.
d. Actively pursue continual improvement in our environmental management
system.
2. This policy will be given widest dissemination.
Copies of the policy will be posted in shops, work areas, and unit bulletin
boards as appropriate. The policy is available to the public through
the I Corps and Fort Lewis Public Affairs Office.
The above Policy has been communicated throughout
all PW Divisions. It serves as the foundation for establishing and operating
the PW EMS. The Environmental Policy is reviewed periodically by the
Director of PW and the PW Division Chiefs to ensure that it remains
appropriate to the nature, scale and environmental impacts of PW activities,
products and services; it is updated as appropriate.
The Policy is available to the public through the Fort Lewis Public
Affairs Office (PAO).
Contractors currently performing projects and
services for PW were notified by the Directorate of Contracting (DOC)
via mail of the PW environmental policy and were provided a copy of
the policy. New contractors are notified of and provided a copy of the
policy during the pre-construction meeting held at the DOC or at the
Fort Lewis area office of the Seattle District, US Army Corps of Engineers.
In addition to and complementing the above Policy,
Fort Lewis Regulation 200-1 contains specific policy statements for
regulatory driven programs to conserve, protect, and enhance the environment
at Fort Lewis.
