The National Defense Center for Environmental Excellence (NDCEE), through the Sustainable Installations Initiative (SII) program, sponsored a sustainability workshop hosted by Fort Shafter, HI on June 6-7, 2006.
The workshop has two primary objectives:
(1) Day 1 - Aimed to bring together DoD, regulatory, and local representatives, while facilitating an information exchange intended to inform participants on the basic principles of sustainability, allow participants to communicate local and DoD policy sustainability initiatives, and ensure the identification of sustainability challenges within Hawaii’s concerns ( i.e. land use and management, energy management, procurement.)
(2) Day 2 (includeded a DoD-only session) - Facilitating a discussion that will allow sharing of solutions and lessons learned, identification of next steps towards development of a strategic sustainability effort, and briefing local Military Services Commanders of the results of the discussion.
Representatives from the DoD, academia, local government, and federal agencies, such as the USEPA, were invited to share and communicate local/contemporary issues that impact the triple bottom line – Mission, Community, and the Environment.
